Judicial Expansion for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court: Sanctioned Strength Increased to 25 Judges
In a progressive move to strengthen the judiciary, the Union Law Ministry has approved an increase in the sanctioned strength of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court from 17 to 25 judges, effective October 25, 2024. This decision, shaped through consultations with the Chief Justice of India, aims to better equip the High Court to handle its growing caseload and improve access to justice across the region.
Under the new structure, the High Court will comprise 19 Permanent Judges and 6 Additional Judges. Of these 25 positions, 17 seats are designated for Bar members, while 8 are reserved for Service members, ensuring a balanced representation within the judiciary. The Chief Justice, Tashi Rabstan, has been urged by the Union Law Ministry to accelerate the nomination process, with a focus on inclusivity—specifically prioritizing Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and Women.
This judicial expansion is a key step towards increasing the High Court’s capacity to provide timely justice, ensuring more efficient legal processes for the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
